At first, I was wondering why I waited so long to read this book. Who am I kidding? My own assumptions of what the book entailed had me putting it off. The book was absolutely nothing like I had assumed.

I am not a fan of BDSM. For some reason, I had assumed this would have a heavy BDSM presence. But it didn't. And the pieces of it did have not only fit the story and characters, but it was done completely with taste. If only other authors took Godwin's example of how to weave something so personal and "taboo" into a romantic, yet haunting story, I might read more of them.

Then there was the student-teacher theme. I always cringe. I have read some that were done well and tastefully, others not so much. I am leery of picking up these books because I never know what I will get. This one is not only tastefully done, but it is done perfectly. Godwin kept Ivory's innocence and maturity at the perfect balance. Every side of Ivory worked and was so realistic. Emeric was no different. She held his character from start to finish. I instantly fell for both characters, student and teacher and all.

This book isn't just about a forbidden romance. It's about growth and learning to heal and let go. I was enthralled with this book from start to finish. I couldn't stop reading it. I didn't want to stop reading it. Page after page, I couldn't wait for more. Needless to say, there was no skimming scenes or covering my eyes in this one. I relished every last word in this book.

Dark Notes edition by Pam Godwin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Pam Godwin is a good writer, but this was my least favorite of her works. It failed for me for a number of reasons. First, the characters were not deeply drawn enough for me to see how this relationship could possibly have been "love at first sight". Emeric - super rich, super talented, super good looking - was immediately enamored of Ivory from the moment he saw her - so much so he was willing to cross that legal line to have her. Why? He had his pick of attractive, submissive women. He had just been fired for an inappropriate relationship at work. Nothing about him screamed that he was the kind of guy who lived life on the edge (until the hard to believe climax), and yet, he risks everything for a girl he has nothing in common with except music because she's hot and submissive. I get why she would be attracted to him - she was desperate for attention and he was such a control freak that he gave her lots and lots of attention. Having said that, aside from music, what scintillating conversations could they possibly be having since she's barely an adult and had, aside from inappropriate sexual relationships, few real life experiences with which to fill up the inevitable conversational lulls between their frequent bouts of sex.

Second, the book's tonality shifted from somewhat dark and gritty at the beginning to hearts and flowers at the end. It felt like the author realized that the people who would eventually rate this 2 or 1 stars because she was underaged and he was kind of predatory needed to be appeased. The climax was completely out of character with Emeric's actual behaviors (not fantasized behaviors) and it range false. The book lost it's way for me as it unfolded from despair to a life's dream fulfilled and strolled straight into fairy tale land.

Last, the "clever" literary devices on sonatas, notes, concertos etc. were overdone and at times, nonsensical. They also occurred more and more frequently as the book progressed and at times they took me straight out of the story.

If you are fan of this author, I still recommend reading this book. I think it was a decent attempt to mainstream/enable a taboo relationship into an acceptable love story. That was always going to be a challenge to readers beyond her fan base (think about how the author of Nine Minutes turned into an apologist in the sequel with the lame "Ginny was really 18, not 15" when Grizz took her.) While not her best, she is still a better writer than most of the other authors covering this genre and therefore worth the read.
Overall Opinion This was an enjoyable darker forbidden romance. I haven't read a bdsm type book in a while, and I thought this author did it well. The teacher/student aspect was sexy, and I know that lots of readers will have issues with the age difference (h is 17 and H is 27) but I didn't. The h had some majorly unfortunate circumstances, and was more mature than the usual 17 year old IMO. I never felt that he was a predator on a young girl, because of the age difference -- but I did feel bad for the h when he started ogling her and treating her like other men do right away. I also had some issues with some of the drama in the book. It just felt like too many issues at times! These are the main reasons for my lower rating.

Brief Summary of the Storyline This is Ivory and Emeric's story. Ivory is 17 and starting her senior year at a prestigious school of the arts. She is severely poor, and sticks out among the rich kids. She has learned ways to support her drug using mom and brother, as well as herself while going to school. She has also dealt with the unfortunate side of being an attractive girl. Emeric's is her new mentor, and he is instantly drawn to her. They start to toe the line of impropriety right away, and of course eventually cross it. There is some drama with family, some issues with the school and other students, some OW drama, some sexy bdsm times, and they fall in love...and they get a HEA ending.

POV This alternated between Ivory and Emeric's POV.

Overall Pace of Story Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove No. Instalust? Yes.

H rating 4 stars. Emeric. He was a sexy, mysterious man. I sometimes didn't like how he failed to communicate with the h, and would just take control of the situation (but I guess that was supposed to be part of his dominant persona)

h rating 3.5 stars. Ivory. I felt really bad for her circumstances. She had so much against her! I just wish that she sometimes made the H work a little harder for her, and wasn't under the golden peen trance ;)

Sadness level Low/moderate. I never needed any tissues, but it does cover some heavy themes.

Heat level Moderate/high. This had a lot of sexual tension, and once they actually become intimate there are a lot of scenes. They have hot chemistry and scenes.

Descriptive sex Yes

Safe sex Yes and no. They are tested and use birth control after results get back. The H never mentions past practices, but I think it's implied that it's similar to what he did with the h. The h says that the men that raped her didn't always use protection.

OW/OM drama Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM Yes

Cheating No

Separation Yes

Closure This actually had a decent jump ahead epilogue with a HEA ending!

How I got it I paid the $3.99 for it on .
