Alright, so this book was ok. It wasn’t bad or good, just ok.

Here’s my condensed summary: Girl is doctor but for all the wrong reasons. Girl stumbles across injured “bad” vamp in her morgue and gets accidently turned after being attacked. “Good” vamp finds girl and offers to help. Girl doesn’t know if she wants “good” vamp’s help so she turns to “bad” vamp to get answers. Now girl is “in love” with both vamps and doesn’t know what to do. Bad crap happens. Crap gets resolved (sort of). The end.

My attention was grabbed at the beginning, but then the book started to go downhill from there. The main character, Carrie, started to annoy the crapola out of me. She’s “in love” with these two very different guys and I have no idea why. Seriously, she couldn’t make up her mind even though it was obvious to me Nathan (“good” vamp) was the one she really had a connection with. It was all very much lust for Carrie, not love.

Nathan, I don’t really know what to say about him. He was all very “tortured soul” like but I never really connected with him. Which is weird for me because I love the tortured souls. I felt bad for the guy. All he wanted to do was help Carrie and she just continued to be an idiot and not heed his advice. If she would just have listened to him in the beginning she would have never been in the situation that started it all, but I guess there wouldn’t be a book then.

Now, the author did a good job with Cyrus (“bad” vamp), I started to like the guy and I understood where he was coming from. Cyrus was all sorts of jacked up, but what do you expect with a father called The Soul Eater? I sympathized with Cyrus just wanting someone to love him for him and not his power/position.

Ugh, the ending was very anticlimactic for me. Carrie’s just a fledgling but she can miraculously hold her own against these vamps who are way more experienced than her? Come on.

I won’t be reading the next book in the series.

The Turning Blood Ties Jennifer Armintrout 9780778322986 Books Reviews

I read this to take a break from some other books whose text is really tiny, because they have been contributing to my headaches. I found this really engaging and overall enjoyable.

As far as sex and violence, there is a lot in common with the Sookie Stackhouse books. But I have to say it's really refreshing to get to read a book about a new vampire, instead of yet another romance between a male vampire and a mortal female. The character was fairly strong, which I appreciate. She did wind up in one or two situations from which she had to be rescued, but in the end she wound up having to do the heroics, so I appreciate that she wasn't just some feisty damsel in distress.

I have to say, the vampires in these books may be the most polarized I've ever seen. On one end, you have these completely sadistic, evil, irredeemable monsters who delight in rape, torture, and murder. On the other, you have the vampires who believe they should all be wiped out as a species. Fans of White Wolf games will understand what I mean when I say that this setting really needs an Anarch Movement!
Not a bad book at all. My friend calls it "Vampire Porn" which is probably not quite a fair assessment but pretty close. It's very violent and there is nothing likeable about the main villain Cyrus, our heroine Carrie's sire. He's a sadist, rapist, narcissistic foot-stomper of a vampire and the second a moment of vulnerability is revealed he goes off on some violent sexual sadist tear. There is also a very unappealing witch in the mix. At the opposite end of the love triangle spectrum is Nathan a brooding human-loving vampire with a dark past that belongs to the "Movement" a group of vampires that are looking to rid the world of vampires. What? Wait a minute. I suppose this is a somewhat noble cause, but I find it hard to believe that any species would work so hard to cement their own demise. Pretty sure this goes against every law of nature, but whatever. It's a pretty entertaining book and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.
This book just felt wrong to me. It deals with the darker side of things, the animalistic, hungry side of human nature that Carrie seems to be struggling to hold on to in The Turning.

The way the author describes the sex scenes is horrible, immediately after the act Carrie is either immediately combative, feeling violated and dirty enough to hop up and go clean herself up.

The blood tie that we kept hearing about all through the story seems to be the reason for arousal and love that Carrie keeps fighting. The vivid description of feeding frenzies and death of key characters was too much for me.

When I read, I read to escape, not to be taken into a dark, seedy world where love does not exist and where people are capable of horrible cruelty.

The fact that the author seems well researched in the medical field to the point that she feels comfortable throwing out the names of drugs right and left makes me wonder if she isn't on staff at a hospital in her area. That being said...if she is she knows that the kind of struggle that Dr. Carrie Aimes went through in the first few chapters just doesn't happen with new doctors. They are excited and eager to save the world. They don't freeze up and run out and almost never would a senior doctor pull them aside and tell them that they shouldn't be a doctor. That part of the story didn't ring true at all for me.

Carrie herself is not that likeable of a character either. She's too much of a shrew, argumenative, seeking love and validation from the wrong sources. The killing scenes were far too vivid for my tastes, the pain too amplified. I could not find one single character that I wanted to identify with in this book. The world is too full of these kinds of depraved acts as it is without filling over 300 pages of a 'fantasy romance' with it as well. Very poorly catagorized...NOT A ROMANCE AT ALL. Not even a flicker of love, nope just cold sex and killing.

However the book itself was well written, so that tells me that Armintrout has some skill as a writter. I just didn't like this particular story.
