When Serial Killers Terrorize a California Beach Community, One Woman Stands in Their Way

Emily Stone doesn’t have a badge. But that hasn’t stopped her from tracking down some of the West’s most dangerous child-killers. Armed with a digital SLR camera, laptop computer and her trusty Beretta, Stone uses her innate gift for detective work to identify the perps — and then anonymously e-mail the evidence to the cops.

Now, the hunt for two brazen serial killers on the loose right in her own coastal California town threatens to expose Stone’s identity — unraveling her carefully constructed cover and jeopardizing her life’s work. But when she gets too close to the action, this razor-sharp hunter becomes the hunted. Cooperating with the handsome local police detective could be the only hope for stopping the rampage directed at unsuspecting young women — and saving herself. Can they piece together the clues in time?

Compulsion mixes CSI-style investigation with a ripped-from-the-headlines plot and a dose of romance for a keeps-you-guessing, fast-paced and savvy thriller, right up until the shocking finale.

I have to admit, I cheated! I actually read the fifth book first so I knew things going into this one that I wouldn't have if I'd read them in order. Given that, I was intrigued by the interesting premise of a former police officer tracking down serial killers. Emily Stone's parents were murdered and the case was never solved. She became a police officer but after uncovering corruption iin the department she was forced to resign. So now she uses her analytical skills, her camera, and her laptop to track down serial killers.

As the book opens she has successfully led police to a killer's burial ground and is on her way home to California when she is sideswiped and rolls her vehicle. She ends up in the hospital, her car, with all her equipment, towed away. She's worried police will learn her identity and uncover what she's been doing. When she finally gets home, she goes to collect her dog, Sergeant, from the neighbors. She learns she has a crazy new neighbor, Donald, who's been intimidating some of the older people in the neighborhood. She doesn't believe iit until she meets the man. Then she's attacked in her home and knocked out. She's sure it was Donald even though he wore a ski mask. She reports his intimidation to the police but not her attack so as not to draw attention to herself. She meets a handsome detective, Rick. Through a series of events, he learns Emily's secret.

This was an entertaining story and the killers were really creepy. Especially since the author takes us into their heads, revealing their thoughts and motivations. The story actually winds up in Indiana where Emily was originally from and culminates in the ki!lers following her and Emily facing them alone. Of course Rick follows her as well since he is her romantic interest iin the story. If you're up for a different storyline and you enjoy serial killer thrillers, this one is for you!

Compulsion Emily Stone Series Book 1 eBook Jennifer Chase Reviews

The story was very juvenile in content and difficult to follow with an awkward writing technique. I felt like I was reading a story written by someone in middle or high school. Capitalizing Killer and Accomplice was just silly. Their killing "frenzies" were poorly described (which may be OK since they were supposed to be gruesome) and the details of the Killer removing body parts was not described in any detail or the reason for doing so. In addition, there were many grammar and spelling errors. EVERY computer has spelling and grammar checks. USE THEM.
I do not recommend wasting the time to read this book. I skimmed most of it just so I could find out who the Accomplice was. And the ending was just poor.
I absolutely loved this book. The main character Emily was very strong and resolute in her hunt for serial killers. I love profilers. She loved to profile killers. She talked about them being organized verses disorganized. Their rituals. Their behavior. I really enjoyed that aspect f the book.

Back to Emily, she could really kick your butt if she wanted to or she could be the sweetest neighbor in the neighborhood. That is her character. She is tough and can mostly take care of herself.

Then enters Rick, from the Sheriff department. He is the lead detective. He is a serious guy who is coming to the end of his marriage. But then he meets Emily and that is where their story begins. He also is the lead detective for the serial killer case.

You will love this book. I stayed up all night til morning. I took Adderall twice to stay awake and read it to stay focused. Ha ha. I have ADD. But I really wanted to not miss a beat. It was so interesting. It is dramatic and it is fiction. It is not realistic. But it is quite an exciting, suspenseful story
Jonathan Kellerman has a novel titled Compulsion...do yourself a favor and read his.
This author is a strange writer. The twists and turns don't play fair with the reader as important info is kept from the reader leaving the reader sitting there thinking "Say whaaaaa?"

The concept of an alpha female heroine who secretly solves crimes where children disappear is excellent. But this author does not know how to write in a way that commands empathy and involvement.

I was fascinated by the prose style. It's like getting a novel via Western Union Telegraph or one twitter 140character tweet at a time. You read info... she did and he did and this happened....
but you can't sink into the adventure because the style is so bad.

The love scene between the heroine and hero was most laughable I've ever written.
I'm not a fan of romance novels but Tami Hoag knows how to write a good love scene in an excellent suspense thriller!

Anyway.... save your money and buy a book that is worth your time! This one is not... I don't plan to buy any more books by this writer.

She needs to go back to the drawing board...or take some courses. James Patterson supposedly writes 80page outlines planning his books. This book is like she wrote the outline and left it at that ....

bizarre.

If she has a friend she could work with the way James Patterson does... she could do the outlines and let the friend do the writing.

whatever... sometimes even if you can make a little money writing... you shouldn't if you can do something else far better...

I don't see this book as written being accepted by any reputable publishing house.
