The premise for this story is outstanding. The technical description and historical accuracy of the setting is wonderful, but after 25 pages I want to talk to whomever did the translation and remind them that you need to know the English idioms if you are going to translate. I speak German and have done some work translating from German into English and it's not easy. Going the other way is much, much harder because I don't know all the German idioms that make a story flow for a German reader....this translation feels like someone ran it through Google translate and then did a rough review afterwards looking for incomplete sentences. Note to the Editor: You really screwed your Author over by doing such a poor job of getting the final translation done. This should have been edited by someone with a background in naval history(there are plenty of competent English authors who could have done this) who could have ensured that the correct language was used.I want to like this book, but I feel like I would be better off reading this in German because in English it sucks.

I really wanted to love this book. As another reviewer noted, the story just continues until the book ends, without a real sense of climax. I like the idea of people from the present transported to the past, I will almost always buy a book like this. I was just frustrated by the fact that nothing happened to bring the book to an end. I was left feeling that the book was two or three chapter too short. To be honest I will probably buy the next one in the series, because I like the genre and the author did create some likable characters.
To the author Please plan a climax to the next story in the series!
I liked this book. Good concept and delivery. I am looking forward to the next book in the series once it gets translated.
I do have some technical gripes that about details but when we are talking about a time traveling steam ship things I can let them slide and still love the book.
Some little things,
Draft, grounding is very much a concern. I have doubts a cruiser that drew 16 feet of water would be able to use the docks that service a wood boat that draws 8 feet at most.Harbor channels and such back then would also not be dredged, if nothing else I would think the skipper would sound the harbor with one of the boats first. Ravenna was built in a marsh, so one can assume the harbor of 370ad would not be the current cruise ship setup with a good turning basin. They would anchor out and use the punt to get to the docks.
Weight, the pilings and such at the dock would easily overloaded by the iron beast.
Funny not about the Ensign running off. I do not know if he does but crazy things do happen, when I was in the Navy we had an ensign get cashiered for smuggling black market turkeys, yup you read that right, frozen turkeys, he hid them in his trunk to sell on the black market. Funny......
A Bremen-class German pre-WW1 cruiser is shifted in time and space to the Adriatic in the second half of the fourth century, thus giving the crew an opportunity to prevent the final split of the Roman Empire and the fall of civilization in Western Europe. For those who like this kind of fiction this novel is very attractive. First, it is the choice of the displaced group they are not only not Americans or British, but they are German, soldiers of the dreaded Kaiser! How interesting would it be to see how the modern Huns integrate in the fabric of the late Roman society! Second, they go into one of the most troublesome historical periods of the European civilization, when the lights of science and philosophy and technology were flickering just before they went out for one thousand years, extinguished by the dissolution of economic and social bonds. Third, the book is a translation from German, and therefore promises a more subtle, European, old-worldish take on the culture clash and the adventures of the displaced crew.
This is the first volume of a series; nine volumes are available in German, which I cannot read. I hope that they will be translated soon.
The book is little less than the initial setup for the series. Characters are introduced, some improbable alliances are announced, and the plot is becoming just about ready to be set in motion; but there is no actual plot, and the ending comes unexpectedly just as the plot showed signs of starting to move forward. Those who want to read an actual story should wait until more volumes are available.
The translation is of unequal quality. Usually it is quite good, I would say, but then English is not my native language; but from time to time it is jarring, especially with respect to nautical terms and expressions, which are occasionally given rather bizarre translations; for example, "little speed" instead of "slow ahead" or some such.
The Romans of the late antiquity are rather less Roman then I would have liked, and even less people of the late antiquity, but then, it is fiction, isn't it. The author does not go into great depths describing the material and spiritual environment of the fourth century, nor does he place any emphasis on the description of the ship and of the life aboard her. A techno-thriller this book is not. The entire budding subplot centered on Julia the proto-feminist feels rushed, with the characters acting way out of character.
Overall, I rather liked the book. I will probably like the series, too, when the rest of the volumes will become available. Recommended for fans of time displacement stories.
