Rasputin Daughter A Novel A Romanov Novel Robert Alexander Books

"Rasputin's Daughter" was good, but not great. I didn't know much about Rasputin, so I was interested in reading about him. The author didn't go very deeply into his story. I would have liked a little bit more background information about Rasputin; his life in Siberia, and a more detailed explanation of how he came to be such a trusted advisor of the royal family. The daughter didn't seem very real to me.
The conclusion of the members of my book group was that he was a fake who played on people's emotions to gain favor and power. Women are not protrayed favorably in his book. It's hard to believe the extent to which they allowed him to use and abuse them. The secret society was interesting-I would have liked to have read more about that in the book. Over all, it was disppointing.

Rasputin Daughter A Novel A Romanov Novel Robert Alexander Books Reviews

Interesting reading knowing fact and fiction are interwoven. But at times slow, boring and simply unbelievable. Will I recommend this book to a friend as a great read, no. Now Alexander's "Kitchen Boy" was wonderful by all comparsions and I did recommend this book to many of my friends.
Really enjoyed reading this book. Makes you feel that you are actually there with his daughter and watching things develop. The Empress was very volnerable when it came to her son and his illness. And Rasputin didn't really help the situation regarding his involvement with the Royal Family and the poverty in Russia at that time.
I love good historical fiction and this was not it. What should have been an interesting read about people that I know little about, was slow moving and boring. I love a read that makes me care about the characters and this book did not. If you need to enhance a paper on Russian history, this book will provide that information. If you are reading for pleasure, this may not be your best choice.
Have you ever been drawn to different points in history? There are quite a few eras that have that draw with me, and the time of Rasputin is one of mine. Grigory Effimovich Rasputin is one of the most interesting characters in modern time. His influence on the Romanov dynasty is phenomenal - and the mystery and happenings of his murder is one of the most interesting legends out there - In Rasputin's Daughter, the story is told through Rasputin's eldest daughter's perspective and it is wonderfully done - Was Rasputin a charlatan drunken user of people, or a master seer and healer? You'll form your own impression after this book - really great - I read this book in 2 sittings - couldn't put it down - das vedania.
Once again Mr. Alexander has written about the time period of the Russian revolutions, and the fall of the Romanovs. This time, however, the emphasis is on Rasputin, who has been almost universallu vilified throughout history since his murder in 1916. This work ostensibly tells of Rasputin through the words of his daughter, and we see a different sort of man. Not that his flaws are glossed over, but the "good" side of him emerges, and we also learn about the various plots to kill him. The book gives a different account of his kiling than is usually acknowledged, and in the context of the story, and in light of actual history, it makes a lot of sense. I am always interested in literature, both fiction and non-fiction, about the last years of the monarchy in Russia, and this book is a welcome adition to my library.
An enjoyable and easy read and I learned a lot about the Romanov era as well. A twist of fate revealed at the end, although maybe somewhat predictable from the storyline. I did think that Maria Rasputin was somewhat mature for a teenager, but can't say that I was surprised after learning about the father she had - a man with a good heart and spirit, but misguided paths. I loved the epilogue and the factual histories of the story's characters at the end. I've had trouble locating historical fiction pertaining to this period, but this did the job and educated me at the same time.
Well done. Researched and a more realistic view, probably, of Rasputin. All we have ever known is what the Communist government wanted us to think. A great understanding of Russia during that era; culture, beliefs and social hierarchy. I bought a copy as a gift for my son.
