I'm kinda new to the romance genre, but what little I had read had often been predictable, formulaic, and a touch cheesy: two perfect star-crossed people meet under impossible circumstances and secretly crave each other madly, but can't for whatever reason. The man's imperfections are even perfectly contrived, with a healed-over broken nose that's just so, and his thoughts and dialogue fantastically feminine . . .

I was SO pleasantly surprised by the cheeky, often hysterical banter and quips inside of The Duchess Deal. At the surface, it reminded me of Beauty & the Beast meets Phantom of the Opera (both of which I love anyway), but the hidden gems within this book were delightful to me. I hadn't expected the novel to crack me up -- which it did, early and often! -- nor did I expect the depth of its themes to sweep me away or knock me out. There were several lines from this book that actually jarred my heart!

I'm officially obsessed. :D

All of this said, there are parts of the romance genre that won't be avoided (you know, like the main characters falling in love), and to me, this book was absolute perfection.

The Duchess Deal Girl Meets Duke edition by Tessa Dare Romance eBooks Reviews

I loved this book.

Emma is a seamstress and she is a determined woman. She goes to collect a debt and ends up becoming a bride.

The Duke of Ashbury was severely burned during the war. He has become a recluse who believes that no one (especially a woman) should be forced to look at him and his hideous scars.

When Emma does not fall into a faint upon seeing him, she becomes interesting.

Ash must provide an heir or his idiot cousin will inherit the title. And since he never leaves the house, he is not likely to find a bride. So, it makes perfect sense to draft the young woman who shows up to collect a debt.

From this opening a wonderful story unfolds.

Ash has been emotionally crushed by his former fiancee. And he really believes that his scars prevent him from living a life which includes other people. He is a very intelligent man who feels a strong responsibility to all the people who are under his care. His isolation has created a man who has no patience with anyone. At the same time, he is caring, and protective and brave. In other words, this man is a hero.

He has met his match in Emma.

Emma has been emotionally crushed by her father. She was thrown out of her home and walked all the way to London in order to find work. She no longer believes that she can ever trust a man, no matter who he might be. She is a very intelligent woman who believes that she can solve problems, because that is what she has been doing since she was 16 years old.

These two people are absolutely wonderful together.

Their conversations are like a tennis match where both players are equally capable of winning.

The dialogue is perfect. They each have a sense of humor and very active minds. And they both have respect for one another. It is easy to picture the twinkle in their eyes when they are sparring with one another.

There are secondary characters in the story, but Emma and Ash are the centers of attraction. Everyone else is there to illustrate how wonderful they are for one another.

This is one of the best romantic novels I have read. I hated for it to end because I wanted to stay and watch the two of them raise a family and live a life that truly is happily ever after.
I LOVED this book and I'm going to say it - this is the best book I have read all year!

Emma and Ash are my new favorite book couple - the chemistry between them sizzled from their first meeting until the very last page.

George Pembrooke, the Duke of Ashbury aka Ash (as well as, bunnykins, my fawn, sunshine and honeybee along with several other pet names - LOL) is in need of a heir and for that he will need a wife. Almost as soon as he writes the words to his solicitor - a woman in a hideous wedding gown appears in his library. He doesn't go out in society since he was wounded in the war, so having a bride appear in his home is perfect.

Emma Gladstone is a seamstress and when Ash's former betrothed calls off the wedding - Emma is stuck with the gown and no money to show for her hard work. Desperate, she visits the Duke in hopes of payment. But to her surprise he offers her marriage. Of course she says no and leaves. But later she rethinks her refusal. Emma has scars of her own, but unlike Ash hers are not visible to the world. So when Ash shows up at her shop and tells her he really wants to marry her - she agrees.

They marry and Emma begins to break down the walls Ash has spent the last two years building. Love was never part of his plan - but as hard as he tries to keep her out, Emma storms the walls and steals his heart.

I laughed out loud, I cried and I had to fan myself reading this book - it was perfect. It is well written, flows perfectly, has a great supporting cast, witty banter, hilarious internal (and external) dialogue, steamy love scenes, a little heartache, a protective hero and a loving heroine.

If you are looking for a great read with a lot of laughs, emotion and a soulmate type of love, look no further - this is that book and it is a MUST READ KEEPER!!!
